Objectives

Programme

1.      Communication: the course starts with the introduction of key concepts that are connected to different forms of human communication (e.g. verbal and non-verbal communication).

2.      Visual communication: at the beginning of the term, various definitions and approaches to visual communication are critically discussed.

3.      The power of images: diverse examples for ‘powerful images’ (for instance, award winning pictures created by photojournalists).

4.      The role of visual materials in the socialization process: visual materials have a significant impact on our thinking, thus it is worth to discuss their roles in socialization.

5.      Ethics of creating and sharing pictures: today it is very easy to create and share images and videos, but there are also important ethical questions about these practices.

6.      Advertisements and brands: commercial advertisements use various persuasion tools in order to make us think and act in certain ways, so it is important to learn about persuasion techniques, branding and targeting processes.

7.      Social advertisements and awareness raising projects: differences and similarities of advertisements and social advertisements, the identification of ‘socially important’ issues, and the challenges and potentials of raising social awareness;

8.      Media and social media campaigns: differences and similarities

9.      Self-representation in the social media: the characteristics of profile pictures as self-representations and the process of online identity construction;

10.  Science communication: infographics, edugraphics, and contemporary data visualisation techniques;

11.  Visual representations of gender: some examples for stereotypes, gender roles, objectification in the advertisement industry, and the roles of colours.

We live in the age of social media, and we need to process a flood of imagery, visual stimulations and media messages every day. The course aims to provide adequate navigational tools for students, by improving their visual, media and online literacy. By using various educational methods, the course aims to improve creative, critical and independent thinking. We discuss and analyse social phenomena by means of exploring their manifestations in the visual sphere. With the help of the methods covered in the course students learn to understand communicative processes in the arts, social campaigns, product design, advertisement, and other social phenomena. The course has two main goals; first, to show how a number of social issues are presented in the public visual sphere. The second goal is to deepen the theoretical – sociological, philosophical, etc. – knowledge of the students on the topics and issued covered during the semester.
