Objectives
During the lectures, the following topics will be covered:
1. Characteristics of living systems: structural and dynamic properties, relationship between structure and function
2. Types and main features of biological and biomimetic materials: biocompatibility and biodegradation
3. Amino acids, peptides, and proteins: constitution, configuration, conformation, helix-forming and helix-disrupting properties, helix-to-globule transition
4. Structural proteins: keratin, silk, collagen, and elastin
5. Carbohydrates: sugars, cellulose, chitin, starch, pectin, agarose, and hyaluronic acid. Biological ceramics: calcite, aragonite, hydroxyapatite
6. Structural analysis of biological soft materials: X-ray diffraction and scattering, infrared spectroscopy, NMR, TEM
7. Biological transport processes: conductive and flow transport processes, active and passive transport, osmosis, absorption
8. Drug active ingredient transport: conventional and controlled active ingredient release, nanomedicine
9. Biological nanoparticles: extracellular vesicles, viruses, and lipoprotein particles
10. Synthetic biomimetic materials
After the lectures, students can gain practical experience related to the analysis of biological and biomimetic materials through a chosen measurement method (transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and microfluidic resistance pulse measurement) (projekt work).
