Objectives
- Repetition test of the previous semester.
- Refinery products. Discussion of the main refinery product types. Energy producing products, non-energy producing products.
- Refinery processes. Discussion of the main refinery processing units. Desalting, distillation, hydrotreating, catalytic processes, residue upgrading processes.
- Refinery flow scheme. Based on the processes and products discussed, we build a theoretical refinery flow diagram.
- Production of non-conventional hydrocarbons: the shale gas/oil story. How the shale revolution converted the USA economy?
- Theory of catalysis. What are the catalysts, what types are available. Where do we use them. Main catalytic processes.
- Catalyst management. What can we do with the used catalysts? How we can reduce the cost of catalyst replacement? What are the alternatives of used catalyst disposal?
- Case studies from the refinery operation.
- Presenting your homework to the fellow students.
- Refinery site visit. Units to be visited according to the actual operational situation.
Theory of the catalysis and industrial examples.
Discussion of the complete refinery flowscheme interactions.
Processing of different crude oil types, from different sources: modification of the refinery.
Gasoline pyrolysis, products separation, final products.
On site presentations in the refinery.
