Objectives
Lectures:
Characterization and calculation of liquid-liquid and gas-liquid equilibria.
Equilibrium ratio, vapor tension, Antoine equation, Raoult-Dalton equation, relative volatility, bubble-point calculations, phase distribution calculations.
Single stage equilibrium distillation and flash distillation.
Batch distillation. Rayleigh equation.
Continuous multistage distillation.
Reflux ratio. MESH equations. Upper and lower operating lines. Q-line. Graphical determination of the theoretical number of stages. Graphical determination of the minimum number of theoretical stages. Fenske equation. Minimum reflux ratio, graphical construction. Relations between number of stages, reflux ratio, and product purity.
Plates and packings. Stage efficiency, HTU, NTU, HETP. Column capacity.
Absorption. Kremser-Souders-Brown equation.
Liquid-liquid extraction. Equilibrium ratio, distribution ratio, and phase ratio.
Simple extraction. Repeated extraction. Continuous countercurrent multistage extraction.
Mass, component and heat balance equations of chemical reactors.
Simple calculation methods. Isothermic, adiabatic and cooled operations. Stirred tank reactors in batch and continuous modes. Cascades. Tubular reactors.
Seminars:
Short cut methods for distillation column design
Simple problems in reaction engineering (isothermal and adiabatic CSTR, tubular and stirred batch reactors, ideal operation)
Laboratory:
Theoretical background of the laboratory practices are mainly the topic of requisite course.
