Objectives
Organic chemistry (32 hours): Molecular structure. Stereochemistry, conformation. Single step and multistep reactions. Energy profile of reactions. Acid-base equilibriums. Physical and chemical behavior of saturated hydrocarbons, open-chain unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons. Chemistry of compounds with carbon heteroatom single bond (halogen compounds, alcohols, phenols, ethers and amines). Reactivity of carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives of carboxylic and carbonic acids). Lipids, carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, nucleic acids, coenzymes.
Biochemistry (24 hours). An introduction: structure of procariotic and eucariotic cells; majos classes of biomolecules; C, H, N, O cycle, Properties of enzymes; classification of enzymes; role of cofactors; (Glycolysis; Pentose phosphate cycle Fatty acid degradation (b-oxidation), Amino acid catabolism (deamination, decarboxilation), Citric Acid Cycle; Glyoxilate cycle, Urea cycle, Electron ttansport, Oxidative phosphorilation). Photosynthesis (light reaction, Calvin cycle, Photorespiration), Fatty acid-, triacilglycerol-, phospholipid biosynthesis, Nucleic acid biosynthesis (DNA, RNA), Protein biosynthesis, Regulation (molecular, cell and body level).
