Objectives
The definition of safety. Workplace safety. The relationships of employer and employee. Occupational and environmental hazards. The human error. The hierarchy of protection against workspace accidents efficiency . Workplace safety. Risk management, risk assessment. Case study of Oppau disaster The social assessment of risk. 4 hours
Working with pressure vessels, specific requirements. Pressure relief, test pressure, calculation of the hazard indicator. Gas cylinders and working with them.
Equipment operated at reduced pressure. Getting inside chemical equipment. Liquefied gases. Case studies of Devnya and Bhopal catastrophes. 3 hours
The concept of intoxication. Permissible time weighted average concentrations, Permissible peak concentration and maximum concentration. Classification of toxic materials. Effective dose, lethal dose, lethal concentration. Case study of Seveso disaster. 3 hours
Classification of toxic substances based on their effects. Carcinogenic substances. Hazardous nature of toxic substances in the laboratory, industry and environment. Protection against toxic substances. 3 hours
Fire and explosion hazards. Basic concepts: fire, explosion, detonation. Flammability limits, flash point, ignition temperature. case study of Feyzen disaster. Brisance. Formation of explosion. Classification of combustible materials. Heat, shock and friction sensitivity testing before factory production. 2 hours
Auto igniting and peroxide forming materials. The principle and practice of protection against fire and explosion based on ignition sources. Open flames, hot surfaces, electrical and mechanical (steel, light metal) spark. Hazards from electrostatic charges. Protecting against electrostatic discharge. Spark sensitivity. 3 hours
Storage and transport of dangerous substances. H and P phrases. Safety Data Sheet.Transport and storage of incompatible materials. Disaster risk during transport (Sárbogárd, Mississagua cases). 2 hours

Interpretation and estimation of biological risk. Clearing infection - general considerations and methods. The four levels of biosafety (by definition, mycobacterial classification, personnel, general and specific rules, laboratory design). 2 hours
Specific safety rules and procedures. Good Microbiological Technique. Genetically modified organisms (definition, potential threats, control and standpoints). Transportation of biological materials - control and regulations. 1 lesson
