Objectives
Evolution of microprocessors. Architecture of a basic microcomputer. Basic elements and aspects of microprocessors (bit number, busses, interrupt, stack, direct memory access, etc.)
Simple microprocessors: architecture and parts (ALU, Control Unit, Registers, etc.), operation (phases, machine cycles, instructions). Instruction set, machine code. Addressing modes. Assembly programming.
Peripherals and peripheral interface elements (typical tasks of interfacing, special VLSI circuits, characteristics, concept of intelligence, multifunction element, chipsets). Levels of information storage (operation of cache memory, types, advantages - disadvantages).
Advanced microprocessors (developments in technology and architecture: cache, FPUs, virtual memory management, segmented memory handling, protected mode of operation, support for multiprocessors systems, parallel ALUs, pipelines, dynamic mode of execution, out of order execution, etc.)
Memories (types and operation, classes, parameters, functions, properties, interface, applications). Microprogrammed and wired control unit (principle, levels, advantages - disadvantages, examples).
RISC and CISC processors (idea, aims, advantages - disadvantages, tendencies).
Microcontrollers (idea, basics, characteristics, advantages).
Parallel processing (levels of parallelity, multiprocessor systems, structures). basic studies in PCs architecture.
Local area networks (network elements, structures, OSI model, protocols, etc.).
Applications of microcomputers.
