Objectives

Programme

Theoretical: structure of a modell, modelling methods. Layer-oriented 2D design. 2D curves, surfaces. 3D systems: modelling based on mesh, NURBS, patch. Analysis of mesh-based systems. Overview of modelling techniques: point-based, standard primitives, procedural modell creation, 3D scanning. Cameras, perspective projection. Lighting, procedures (gravity, physics, particles). Materials: optical characteristics, material design, shaders.

Practical: Introduction of 3D Studio Max. UI, viewports, panels, moduls. The theoretical topics are supported by step-by-step examples following instructions of lecturer.

1. Requirements, demo animation including the main workflow

2. Viewports, transformations, navigation, graphical primitives and usage

3. Basic tools, distribution, alignment, multiplication of objects

4. Modifier stack, staructure and functionality of stack, cloning

5. 2D -> 3D conversion, lathe, extrude

6. 2D -> 3D conversion, loft, loft deformations, examples

7. Lighting, types of light sources

8. Materials: types, usage, optical features

9. Materials II, animation, key frames

10. Animation, track view, render engines

11. Hierachy: forward and inverse kinematics

12. Short lectures I. (NURBS, Low Poly)

13. Short lectures II. (Camera match, Video Post, Scripts)

14. Short lectures III. (MassFX, particles)

Short lectures are distributed uniformly is the semester, so the schedule above can be changed.

The aim of this course is to get students acquainted with the 3D Studio Max graphics and animation system. The course introduces tools for computer-aided design and production of modern advertising material, as well as for industrial and architectural design. Students will also learn about new methods for visualizing and manipulating data.

General rules
Requirements: In lecture term: a small project task (creation of a short animation film) is choosen by students. It has to be presented at the last week before exam term. The succesful presentation is the condition of the signature. Rating of the project is counting int he examination. In the exam term: Examination. The closing step of the subject is an exam based on the theoretical and practical materials of the subject. Written exam.  Additional possibilities: Missed project can be supplied at the replacement week, exams can be repeated according to the general rules.
