Multimedia (including text, image, audio and video data) will play a central role in future information systems in a two-fold way: Multimedia contents – such as music, video films, e-books etc. – will be sold to a rapidly growing extentEven information services not offering multimedia contents as their main product, will use multimedia to provide an enhanced user interface – such as portals with video presentations, or handys with an acoustic interface even for non-acoustic dataIn the light of such a vision, current technology seems to be still pre-mature. Current resource management strategies are more or less inadequate for multimedia on all levels of usual computer systems (including operating systems, networks and databes management systems). Therefore, the technology of distributed multimedia systems is an active area for resreach and standardization. The course gives an introduction in this broad and challenging area.
