Objectives

Programme

1st – 2nd weeks    Introduction, mobile network basics. Introduction, basic concepts of mobile wireless networks. Vertical and horizontal value chains in the mobile communication market. Fix-mobile convergence, fix-mobile substitution toward a Next Generation Network (NGN) architecture.

3rd – 5th weeks    Service architectures, IMS. Mobile network evolution toward an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based NGN network. IMS architecture, and protocols summary. IMS based application services and network services.

6th – 8th weeks    Call Control Protocols. Basic functions of call control, overview of some commonly used call control protocol, such as H.323 and SIP. SIP architecture and the operation of SIP protocol, SIP messages.    

9th -  11th weeks    Transferring multimedia content in wireless networks. Comparison of Quality of Service (QoS) in wired and wireless networks. IP based QoS techniques in wireless networks, transmission control protocols in wireless environment, UMTS bearer services. TCP, DCCP, STCP, UDP protocols, the concept of multi-homing and multi-streaming.

12th -13th weeks    Authentication, authorization, accounting (AAA). Billing and accounting in packet switched systems, IMS billing subsystem. User authentication and authorization. Protecting privacy, indoor and outdoor localization in mobile systems.

14th week    Integration with mobile platforms (Android, IOS). Implementing mobile services on well known mobile operating systems, such as Android an IOS.

The course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to service provisioning in converging wireless, wired and mobile networks, with special focus on transmission and call control protocols, service architectures and the special challenges of billing and regulation.
