Objectives

Programme

In the first week of the subject (after the registration week), students apply for the topics or areas offered and consult with the advisor about the specific tasks. It is recommended to inquire at the department in the examination period before the semester, if possible. It is recommended that the topic is a follow-up of the topic pursued in Project Lab 1.

Projects are usually focusing on business-related computer science problems. Topics can typically be chosen from the areas below: business modeling, expert systems, decision support systems, business continuity planning, information system development, knowledge base design, data- and knowledge-base management, formal languages in modeling, information strategy planning, project planning and management, standard development solutions, information system re-engineering, adaptation of integrated enterprise resource planning systems, electronic and mobile business, business applications of web technologies. Further, topics in system development, corporate/organizational-level application integration, intelligent electronic and mobile solutions, information systems aspects of business continuity, IT-supported organization development, inter-organization applications, infocommunication services, geoinformatics, integrated enterprise resource planning systems, data- and text mining, trend analysis and visualization, decision support, development methodologies, database management, process management, risk management, change and configuration management, application portfolio management, artificial intelligence, IT audit, and teamwork support may also be available.

At the beginning of the semester, students and advisors agree on the tasks to be completed and their schedule. The format of the document summarizing this information (task assignment) and its submission rules are set by the host department of the subject.

A topic offered by another faculty, university, or a company (business organization) can be accepted only if the department assigns a departmental advisor. The external advisor must be an expert with a university diploma or master’s (M.Sc.) degree and must be approved by the department head. The topic shall be chosen and the documentation shall be written so that the work of the candidate can be evaluated without releasing information that violates the interests of the company (business organization).

Project Labs can be carried out abroad as well, in any language of instruction at BME: Hungarian, English, French, German, and Russian. In this case, the topic and the tasks shall be confirmed in advance by the host department of the subject, similarly to the case of industrial Project Labs. The foreign advisor must write a short report about the candidate’s work that is evaluated by the departmental advisor. The work carried out abroad needs to be reported just like Project Labs completed in Hungary.

Two or more students can work on a joint project, provided that the work and the results of each contributor can be unambiguously separated. In the task assignment, tasks to be solved individually, as well as those to be solved by other students working on the joint project needs to be clearly stated.

In this subject, students solve complex problems in business information systems, resulting in a technical product in which the student’s contribution is well-separable. During the subject, they learn about each work phases in business information system development and perform the subtasks with the highest possible level of independence. The Project Lab subjects prepare the student both for the thesis project and for independent work as a business information system engineer.

Lab subject. The student must complete the tasks in the task assignment that had been written together with the advisor. If the work is carried out outside the department, then the student must regularly report the work progress to the departmental advisor. The department must provide the resources for the work that are not available to the student: arrange consultation with faculty members or external experts, provide special services.

General rules
Requirements: a. During classes: Assessment during the semester -          The advisor continuously monitors the scheduling, the work progress, and the contribution of the student. The student must regularly report the work progress to the departmental advisor, even if the work is carried out outside the department. -          At the end of the semester, every student needs to report the completed work both in writing and in an oral presentation. -          The main text of the written report should be at least 30 pages, and must be submitted 5 workdays prior to the oral report. It shall contain a literature overview or a summary of the system applied to solve the problem, description of independent work, and references. -          Oral reports are conducted in one session for each specialization. Students presenting at a session must attend the entire session. The oral reports shall be delivered by means of a 10-minute presentation with slides. Grading A faculty committee consisting of all the advisors grades the project based on the recommendation of the advisor and by considering the following components: -          the student’s attitude towards the project, the completeness of the solution, its quality and professional value (about 50%); -          the quality of the written report (about 25%); -          the quality of the oral report (about 25%). Students fail if: -          the project was largely neglected; -          the tasks for the semester were not completed in an acceptable quality; -          the written report was not submitted or oral presentation was not delivered by the due date or their quality was not acceptable. b. During the examination period: - Additional possibilities: The written report can be submitted and the oral report delivered at a specific time during the supplementary assessment days.
