Objectives
Programme
1. Commercial cellular mobile network architectures and functional elements.
2. Evolution of mobile network protocols. Mobility management, handover solutions.
3. Mobility support in higher layers, in IPv4 and in IPv6.
4. Radio interface capabilities and requirements in 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G systems.
5. Local wideband communication technologies.
6. Typical devices and protocols of the most widespread technologies (WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, UWB, ZigBee).
7. Heterogeneous mobile networks.
8. Requirements of mobile backhaul and core networks. Backhaul and core connections over wired transport networks.
9. Performance equirements and solutions in wired transport networks in the access, aggregation and core network segments.
10. Mobile-specific solutions in transport networks.
11. Quality of Service requirements, performance and availability requirements and their modelling.
12. Means of providing quality in various network technologies (xPON, CWDM, DWDM, CET, MPLS, IP/MPLS). Special problems of mobile networks.
13. requirements for multimedia traffic.
14. Typical technology solutions in mobile and transport networks.
The topics presented in lectures are extended by case studies. The topics of classroom excercises are the following:
1. Mobile networks. Evaluation of mobility management and handover.

7. Modelling of multimedia.
The objective of this lecture is to show the most important technologies of modern mobile communication systems; to describe mobile networks in view of multimedia applications. Mobile networks are treated in this course as functional units but technological details are not discussed. This is how the lecture provides also information on the most relevant core networking solutions used in mbile networks. The tiopic contain multimedia-related classes, whose aim is to show how multimedia is supported by the networks. In relation with these topics, we also discuss the following: modelling and quantitative description of transmission requirements; how to design networks fulfilling these requirements.
