Objectives

Programme

1: Wired access network technologies - an introduction. Different DSL solutions: ADSL(2+), VDSL(2), Gigabit DSL.

2: Cable network - architecture, spectrum allocation, regulation of competitive charging, standardization. DOCSIS (1.0 – 3.1).

3: Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Terabit Ethernet, Metro Ethernet.

4: Spanning Tree Protocol, RSTP, MSTP.

5: Optical networks: FTTC, FTTH, passive and active architecture

6: Communication in the network layer. IPv4 addressing, subnetting, virtual private networks.

7. IPv6 addressing, headers, migration strategies

8: Routing: distance vector based (RIP). link-state based (OSPF).

9. Routing between domains, the BGP protocol. The MPLS protocol

10. Group communication - IP Multicast. Group management protocols (IGMP, MLD).

11. Multicast routing protocols (DVMRP, MOSPF, PIM). IP Multicast vs Applications Layer Multicast - advantages, disadvantages. Anycast.

12. The transport layer. Operation of the TCP protocol, reliable transmission, congestion control.

13. Different TCP versions. The UDP protocol and its applications.

14. An outlook on future solutions for communication networks (SDN, cloud communication, cloud networking, the Internet of the future, the Internet of Things).

The objective of the course is to familiarize the students with the operating principles of the various currently used and future wired access technologies, mostly focusing on the data link layer. On the other hand, the aim is to present the basic principles of network layer communication, covering both wired and wireless networks, with special emphasis on routing algorithms and group communication (multicast). Finally, the aim is to present the most well-known protocols in the transport layer, and to provide an outlook on the future development directions of communication networks.

Oktatási módszertan

The 3 hours per week are divided into 2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of practice. In the practical part, we will carry out concrete case studies related to different technologies, transmission solutions, communication protocols and network applications.
