Objectives

Programme

Introduction. Basic requirements and properties of content delivery networks.

Architectures of content distribution networks.

General structures of content delivery networks: Centralized and decentralized models. Components of content delivery networks: structures and functions.

Transport protocols used in content delivery networks.

Replications technologies in content delivery networks: Scalability, efficiency, dynamic settings. Performance evaluation of replication strategies.

Operation and management of content delivery networks.

Caching methods in content delivery networks. Redirection strategies.

P2P-based content distribution systems. Example: Bittorent system.

Resource management and resource allocation in content delivery systems.

Mathematical modelling and analysis of resource management and resource allocation strategies.

Security and privacy issues in content delivery networks.

Application specific content delivery networks. Case studies: Akamai, Limelight, CDNetworks.

Open research issues in content delivery networks.

The aim of this course is to provide the students with different aspects of content delivery networks both from theoretical and practical points of view. The course describes and illustrates different technologies that are used in content distribution networks. It also teaches the students on the applications as well as the operation of content delivery networks.
